EL CENTRO
El Centro is the Cultural and Community Center for the Latinx community here at Virginia Tech. Established in July 2016, It stands as a support space for all Latinos and Hispanos peoples, and all those interested and allied with our culture. Located in 309 Squires Student Center is El Centro, in it you’ll find community resources, mentors, and familia. With inspiration everywhere it’s the perfect spot for holding meetings, showing up to study, discuss programs or even just to hang around and chat.
El Centro works in tandem with the LatinX Library to procure and preserve hundreds of documents in multiple languages, a project that was initiated by a 2015 Virginia Tech Graduate School Diversity Scholar and which now hosts over hundreds of texts in multiple languages about our history at Virginia Tech, and how our culture and community shines.
September 15th – Oct 15th is Hispanic-Latinx Heritage Month where we honor the traditions, cultures, and contributions of both Hispanic and Latinx Americans. Our roots lay deep in both Americas and Spain. During this time El Centro and all those affiliated share history, heritage, and accomplishments of our culture.
Latin Association of Student Organizations
LASO or the Latin Association of Student Organizations is the umbrella organization that sustains all latinX student organizations here at Virginia Tech. LASO sponsors large venue entertainment and educational programs focused on LatinX Culture that unites the LatinX organizations, community, community, and promotes awareness and knowledge to the general campus community. We also address, support, and promote the issues and concerns of the Latinx community and Latinx students. The latinx community is growing at Virginia Tech and LASO takes pride in making the Latinx voice heard at Virginia Tech. By coordinating events with its constituents, LASO ensures that the Latino community’s presence is felt on campus.
